Cardi B’s Smile Makeover with Porcelain Veneers

What is the first priority of an aspiring star? Often, it’s getting their teeth fixed. They know they have talent, but they have found from experience that it’s hard for them to get attention for their talent. That’s also the case for 23-year-old Cardi B, one of the summer’s breakout stars thanks to her appearance on Love and Hip Hop: New York and her edgy hit single “Bodak Yellow.”

With the release of the before and after pictures from her smile makeover, she has talked about her experiences on social media and how they partly drove her to get her teeth fixed.

Enduring Insults about Her Teeth

Cardi B–who takes her nickname from Bacardi rum–debuted on season 6 of LHHNY, and she immediately started receiving negative comments about her teeth. But even before that, she’d been experiencing the negative attention her teeth received. She started as a social media personality, with a hugely popular Instagram account, which has received over five million followers.

She credits her popularity to her ability to just get on camera and be herself. She says that when people meet her, they are surprised at how much she is like her Instagram personality. She also says that getting famous that way means being able to shut down trolls when they come up. But for all her claims about being able to stop the haters online, she couldn’t stop herself from internalizing their comments about her teeth, in particular her snaggleteeth in the lower arch.

She decided she was uncomfortable and tired of having people talk about it, so she felt it was time to do something about it.

Her smile makeover was featured in episodes one and two of LHHNY season 7, and her smile features prominently in the video for her hit song, which even refers to her smile makeover with porcelain veneers. (We’re not linking it here because the lyrics are very explicit, but if you look it up, it’s not hard to find.) Her smile also received a lot of attention during her appearance on the red carpet at the VMAs.

Are You Unhappy with Your Smile?

You don’t have to be a rap star–or even an aspiring rap star–to want to get your teeth fixed. As many people find out, social media can be a hard place if you have something that draws negative attention like an unattractive smile. The hardest part is that many times the trolls aren’t saying anything you don’t already know or feel, and that makes their echo that much harder to forget.

Getting your smile fixed because of internet trolls is not a good reason, but getting your smile fixed because you are personally unhappy about it is. Sometimes it’s just hard to separate the two.
