Whether you’re athletically inclined and your mouth needs protection in your waking hours or you’re a tooth grinder whose mouth requires defense while you sleep, we offer different types of durable, custom-fit mouthguards to fit your individual needs.
Nightguards for Grinders and Clinchers
Experienced Burke, Virginia, dentist Dr. Pamela Marzban offers two styles of nightguards for patients who grind or clench their teeth in their sleep. Eclipse nightguards are available in hard or soft forms; both are custom-made to provide stabilization to your jaws and protect you against teeth grinding and teeth clinching, which can prematurely wear your teeth, impact your jaws and gums, and contribute to the painful condition [link id=’114′ text=’temporomandibular joint disorder’] (TMJ or TMD).
Hard nightguards are based on impressions of your lower and upper teeth in addition to your bite registration. They are crafted of comfortable yet rigid form-fitting resin that limits your ability to grind and clench your teeth, and reduces the impact of contact between your upper and lower teeth while you sleep.
Soft nightguards are constructed of a more flexible material and require only impressions of your upper and lower teeth. The nightguard mold is warmed under a vacuum system heater, then placed over your teeth. As the nightguard cools, it conforms to your teeth and will maintain a pliable retention.
The type of nightguard that’s right for you depends on the severity of your condition and your personal preference in terms of comfort. Dr. Marzban can make a recommendation during a consultation to review your specific problem.
Sports Mouthguards for Athletes
Unlike the progressive wear caused by nighttime teeth grinding and clenching, the impact caused by sports injuries is immediate and can be severe.
Athletic mouthguards, like nightguards, are made based on impressions of your teeth and crafted in varying levels of strength based on your individual needs. Dr. Marzban uses Intact mouthguards, which are custom-made to limit impactful forces to the jaws and teeth of athletes ranging from gymnasts to football players to wrestlers.
Properly fitting sports mouthguards can protect against teeth damage, gum and jaw injury, and, an increasing number of studies suggest, help reduce the occurrence and severity of concussions and neck injuries.
