As a parent, you want your child to have healthy, strong teeth and gums free from pain and decay. You should meet with our experienced [link id=’73’ text=’family dentist’] Dr. Pamela Marzban to discuss how to care for your child’s teeth and gums. The American Dental Association provides the following guidance:
- For infants, gums can be cleaned with a soft, clean, moist washcloth or piece of gauze.
- As the first few teeth appear, use a child’s toothbrush and water to gently clean the teeth.
- When your child is about two years old, you should use a small, pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste to brush your child’s teeth. Be sure to instruct your child to spit out the toothpaste and monitor to make sure he or she is doing so.
- Once there are two teeth touching each other in your child’s mouth, tooth flossing should be started to [link id=’47’ text=’prevent cavities’] and gum inflammation.
- As your child grows older, continue to help with brushing until you know your child can do it on his or her own, with minimal supervision from you.
- Schedule your child’s first dental appointment within six months of the appearance of the first tooth.
Our family dentistry team will make sure you have all the information you need to be prepared to take care of your child’s teeth and to teach your child great dental hygiene habits.
