Hard Work Opens Doors

Barbara Valentine was accustomed to working hard to achieve her goals. She learned the value of hard work and determination from her mother. After her father died when she was nine, Barbara’s mother took over his contracting business while continuing to run her beauty salon business and raise two children. Her mother told Barbara, “If you can dream it, you can achieve it.”

Barbara internalized this advice, and she has enriched it into her own beliefs about how to be successful, “I believe if you study and work hard, treat people like you would like to be treated, have a good work ethic, doors will open for you.”

Barbara has shown her beliefs to be true. Hollywood is a hard place for a woman to achieve success as a producers, directors, writers, and actors. It’s much harder than for men, but Barbara has achieved an enviable level of success. She has become an award-winning producer, multimedia executive, reporter, and on-camera host. Over her 30-year career, she has garnered five Emmy Award nominations, and two Emmy wins. She has served as an executive producer on hundreds of projects in film, television, and digital media. She has been recognized and welcomed into some of the most elite organizations in her field, including the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Executive Peer Group.

A Deadly Diagnosis Is Another Challenge

Barbara was getting ready to start production on a new, ambitious multimedia project, the 50 Plus Report when she was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic triple-positive breast cancer. It was a tremendous blow, and it hit her hard. At first, all she could do was sit in her car and wonder “What am I going to do now?” She was worried not just for herself, but for all the people she’d engaged in her new project. She couldn’t let them down.

She let herself feel the weight of the diagnosis, but didn’t let it stop her. She says, “I had a little cry, took a deep breath, put my shoulders back and turned my trust over to God.”

NuCalm Helped Her Maintain a Good Attitude

Maintaining a positive attitude in the face of her diagnosis has been a challenge. She had fear, anxiety attacks, and was racked by uncertainty. She initially turned to anti-anxiety drugs to try to cope with the magnitude of the situation.

She initially borrowed a friend’s NuCalm system, believing that the product was just too good to be true. When she tried it, though, she had what she described as a “spiritual experience,” resulting in a serenely peaceful feeling.

Through the course of her treatment, NuCalm not only helped Barbara deal with the anxiety of going through chemo, but also with some of chemo’s physical effects, such as nausea.

Beyond cancer treatment, NuCalm has also helped Barbara with her professional life. It has helped her combat writer’s block that she sometimes gets when facing a tight deadline.
