Risk of Dental Implant Failure Increased by SSRIs

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) have long been known to slow bone growth and increase risks for fracture. Now, a six-year study conducted by the International and American Associations for Dental Research suggests these same medications may interfere with osseointegration and increase risks for implant failure.

The study looked at the success rate of [link id=’58’ text=’dental implants’] in 490 patients at both three and 67 months. Patients who were taking SSRIs saw rates of rejection and failure over twice as often as those who were not, at 10.6 percent and 4.6 percent respectively. Results from this study have been published in the September issue of the Journal of Dental Research.
