Veneers can completely renovate smiles. But, as people start doing research, they’ll come across a variety of options. Which material is best? What are the pros and cons of each option? When it comes to choosing the right type of veneers, there are a few factors to consider. Patients should think about the look they want and their budget. The three different types of veneers patients have to consider are porcelain (our preference), ceramic, and composite resin.
Porcelain
Porcelain veneers are our recommended veneer material for patients deciding the right type of veneers for them.
We recommend porcelain over every other material.
- They’re the thinnest option available. Being thinner makes this option the most comfortable and most natural-looking and feeling overall.
- They’re the longest lasting material. Compared to alternatives, porcelain can have a lifespan of up to 15 years with proper care.
- Natural teeth don’t have to be shaved down before the veneer is placed. This huge benefit eliminates the sensitivity that usually comes with other kinds of veneers.
Ceramic
Ceramic is arguably the most popular option in regards to materials. This type is processed in a lab to render them dental-grade.
As one of the most popular types on the market, they are:
- Durable and can last about 10 years
- Available at a mid-level price point and usually affordable for most patients
- Natural looking, but thicker than porcelain
Composite Resin
Composite resin is another popular option for patients.
This material is:
- The most affordable
- Slightly more likely to stain
- Less with a lifespan of about 5 years
- Usually able to be placed in just one treatment and requires fewer dental visits upfront
